Triggered Best Seller Results

Here it is

genre v. main stream fiction
As has been quoted by some others, “main stream is a genre” I get it. Humor me a little and hang in here. Some definitions may have to be a judgment call. Genre being Crime, suspense, thriller, chiller, fantasy, science fiction, childrens,….

New York Times best sellers top 15 Non-fiction is a separate list while Amazon and Barnes and Noble combine all of these.

Create Space Print v. Lightning Source
This is also tough, and maybe impossible, but for a broad generalization Create Space is Amazon and Lightening Source is “all other” self publishing for this purpose. Too, will take longer to check. This is, as one book seller said once, interesting. While traditional print-on-demand [POD} publishers have used Lightning Source for quite a while, now many small and “Indy” publishers are using Create Space digital print options. And self publishers can use Lightning Source too, as well as Create Space.

Distribution differences? …….. Amazon v. Ingram’s
Biggest problem here is the sources and numbers, as actual sales are closely held data by the entities. Checking on an industry source [February 5, 2015].

Fiction v. nonfiction
This may be the tougher area, and not as important except on the issue: if one has money to buy books, etc., etc., etc. Even if we read both, it is subjective to most of us, and people usually lean toward one or the other. Since actual sales figures from the industry are generally not public, and NYT list separates all lists into fiction and non-fiction lists, the Amazon or B&N list may be all we have to go by. Publisher house by house may have their hard data. If anyone out there knows, feel free to comment.

Ignored for the moment

New York Times list only: Hardcover v. Paperback Trade v. Paperback Mass Market
ebook v. print book
NYT includes in a combined list but separates Fiction & Nonfiction
The New York Times offers a glimpse for this comparison because they list top 15 books in “combined ebook and print” categories. Too, NYT does separate these list sby fiction and nonfiction. Checking on another study of this [February 5, 2015].

The main question originally is “What are the authors doing to get on the top of lists?”
[March 22, 2015 ……… A few days ago I had interview answers from John Daulton that addresses this question ……….. at least from one author’s – one successful author – experience.]
My question was, What do you think is more important: A great story, a great cover, or a great promotion?
Read John Daulton’s answer in his interview which goes live on April 2.

Brief Bio for Chris …….
Chris Davis is a central California native. Long a reader of history, he was captivated by the US Civil War while living near Gettysburg Pennsylvania in the mid 90’s. Becoming a Civil War reenactor soon after transferring back to California in 2001, that time period soon found its way into his writing.
Normally writing in the typical genre fiction style of Crime / Thriller, the first short story Among Us Soldiers appeared while writing a short Civil War novel ‘Fire on the Mountain’ [unpublished].

Youtube of Late Lester Dow Berger song

Art - Dow Berger 1964

A few months back I posted a memorial to the late Dow Berger. Another friend of his sent me this Youtube of a tape Dow had given him. Here it is from Ward Watson.

Thanks. Dow’s voice sounds higher in pitch than I remembered, but the guitar playing is as I remembered.

Civil War History at SCV Booth

This will be short as an example of how a little effort can go a long way.

Family - Richard - Tim - Evan - at Kearney SCV booth Oct 2014

Richard Kline and Timothy J. Desmond explaining Confederate flags to visitors at SCV booth Oct. 18.

Family - Richard - Evan - Papa - at Kearney SCV booth Oct 18 - 2014

Richard, Evan and Papa at Sons of Confederate Veterans booth at Civil War Revisted even, Kearney Park, Fresno County, California.

There is always more of course. This is not the last of the season’s events in California. While I would love to be in Franklin, Tennessee for November 30th and 150th Franklin, I have to settle for the Moorpark, California event on November 8 and 9, 2014. This is next to Simi Valley where the CA 118 West turns into the CA 23 South. It is at a different location this year at a different nearby ranch.

Hated Protagonists Tips

Family - Tim for Blog Post Oct 2014

It was referred to me last August 19, by author and “The Posse” leader Sunny Frazier, but seems important to comment on now, or anytime. This was about “5 Protagonists Readers Hate,” a blog by Anne Allen. Actually the entire title was “5 Protagonists Readers Hate: Why Writers Shouldn’t Identify too Closely with a Main Character.” The discussion, examples, and reasons are an insight for us as readers as well as for writers of fiction. The other interesting point that is made is the related topic of fictionalizing real life experiences. I’m sure there are more lengthy discussions on the topic, but there is so much that is pithy on our craft in this one piece. She titles these 5 types as:

Mary Sue
The Special Victim
Perfect Pat
Looky-Loo
Literal Larry

There is a last section about the “solution” to the problem, but you can read the entire thing and the “solution” at: http://annerallen.blogspot.com/2014/08/5-protagonists-readers-hate-why-writers.html

If you have more questions, contact me.

The Doc original Two eBook Trailers

Art -Cover for Blog smaller DBI
THE NEW COVER – PRINT REVISED EDITION

This is sort of silly, as I found this piece buried in the draft column – from December 2012. One friend made the observation after viewing the first, longer trailer, that it was “kinda crazy” and “I liked it.” I never pulled either one down. But until the new print version “The Doc revised edition” book trailer is up, these two are still about the basic story.

The Doc - modified%Two versions of this book trailer are on Youtube, and both were severely edited. The first one was around two and half minutes long and needed to have shortened amount of running time. Youtube edited out some of what I thought were important shots. The second version that I sent in was a one minute-forty second version. Youtube cut that version down to thirty-two seconds. Available here is that version in its entirety, 1:40 seconds.

I have heard both pro and con views on the value of book trailers. One editor/writer colleague told me that book trailers were nice but didn’t really help. Yet, another marketing and promotions guru lists books trailers as one of the seven basic needs.

Anyway here is: The Doc Book Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lIAhN6Mhg4
