Paperclip in Paperback

Art - Cover of Annie jacobsen Paperclip Jan 2015

After listening to a radio interview this morning, apparently I am a year late, for the hardbound release. I understand that the paperback is released today for the book Operation Paperclip. I went to the website to catch up.

HOME

This topic was not new to me, but perhaps was last year to many of her fans.

This is January 21, 2015. While listening to the interview this morning, I missed the beginning of it with her. At first I thought she was Linda Hunt on the air, because of her book Secret Agenda [ St Martin’s Press, 1991]. Too, she mentioned things that I had not read or heard before, those being her interviews and the cold war years as “dark times” comments, that were “like now” and as there were “real unanswered questions” then , so are there now.

The late Michael Creighton also wrote a note on the Eisenhower quote to JFK “beware the military-industrial complex” and has said the real “beware” for our era is to beware the “politico-media complex.” He mentions the German scientists – in an appendix to his novel “State of Fear” on page 578 – as going along with the “state [nazi] policies” or they disappeared. Paperclip puts it all together of the need for the cover up at Roswell mushrooming into the UFO mythology, which was supposedly harmless compared to the revealing the truth of the operation, the German interrogations, drug and biological experiments of our own. I alluded to some of this in my novel The Doc revised edition, as I found Secret Agenda answered a lot of questions [1990 – 1991 in the years the “wall came down” in Berlin]. I wish Annie Jacobsen the best with the book, and I’ll get a copy.

Rifling Of Old Cannon, View On The Inside

Carbon Hoax

In 1974 I sat in a college class on Human Ecology. It was a required course for the degree. One of the concerns of the text’s author, and the prof who lectured, was the increase of carbon in the atmosphere. It was something that was there, but not alarming to these students as they had lived through the 1971 Zero Population Growth book popularity by Stanford’s Paul Erlich. Many accepted Erlich’s premise and college men went for sterilization and girls went for the IUDs instead of the birth control pills. The consideration that birth control is “anti-life” seemed not to matter. Since then, there have been many changes. Many starvations around the world, that may or may not have been due to over population, were more likely due to the regional political upheavals.

Bringing the time up to 2006, there appeared in the news the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide as the main culprit in global warming. And so the next new wave of doom which we all have to work to avoid was on. But, it was apparent to me that this was another “anti-life” like Erlich’s ZPG theory, and I sent a short letter to the local paper, which printed it, but received no comments nor counter letters.
Scientists and Universities have been on this for decades.

It was amazing how quickly the globe jumped on this theory. Prince Charles elected to fly to the “States” in a commercial jet, instead of the private jet, in order to “reduce his carbon footprint” in the atmosphere. Amazing.

It is astonishing the growth of the energy business – solar and wind – energy companies new and older power companies financing wind and solar. Do you get calls from and for solar installation?
A cap and trade story Sunday, November 16 – called Carbon Costs, McClatchy article by Dan Walters laments the undisclosed costs to Californians . Buried on page A16 in Fresno Bee’s Sunday issue, Dan Walter itemized a few California finance unknown answers. Some of those were ……. Carbon, cap and trade, renewable energy.

Climate Confusion [Encounter Books, New York, 2008] by climatologist author and warming skeptic Roy Spenser, PhD has been denounced on several websites as a “crank” and his latest paper as “failed to prove his point.” Read his site at: http://www.drroyspencer.com/
But, that reminds me something my editor said once. One of my book’s characters wrote a paper a paper on government control and exposed a domestic black ops unit. I was informed that my premise was not credible because retired CIA consultants had said the author would be denounced, discredited and to be shown to be quite a fool and a crank. Sound familiar? Exactly how Roy Spencer is being treated.
President Eisenhower warned President Kennedy about the “military-industrial complex.” Roy Spenser warned, beware of the “political-media” complex.

A Book and a Donut

Blog Tim at Signing event 2014-08-15 - cropped

One could wail about the demise of and closing of bookstores. In the realm of the business, AKA: “brick and mortar” stores, as opposed to online stores. In our area of a population of 500,000, there are only two stores remaining. By “store,” it was pointed out to me, means “new books” store and not meaning “used book store.” These two stores are the Barnes & Noble and Petunia’s Place. The causes and reasons have been argued, and I’m fairly sure there is no single cause. I noticed B. Daltons closing in our indoor mall before the digital age, and yet the last two B. Daltons here, and one forty-five minutes south, were only closed within last five years.

The main problem for local authors is that there are no longer places to have book signing events. There are hundreds of authors around here. Maybe there are a thousand others writing but who are not in print. So, while the theories about why and how online sales have their part in this, authors still want to have locations and venues for “book signing events.” It is not as bleak as many feared, but there are still problems.

I have at my fingertips a 2003 publication about author’s guide to promotions. There is more than one reference to authors creating their own book venues. These examples ranged from backyard barbecue book signings to local restaurants. Included here could be events being done by local arts councils. Another standard is always the local library branches. So, these are not exactly new ideas. I don’t believe there can be any bad idea.

I recently did a signing event with three other authors, this at a used book store. One of these had announced that he received permission to set up in stores of a grocery chain. We all congratulated him. I mentioned that I had tried to make a similar agreement with Starbucks, but their regional manager would not allow it. I thought it was a perfect idea, and I had visions of the past “Upstart Crow” coffee/bookstore …. that, oh well, it had closed also. Maybe coffee sellers know something we don’t know.

Last week, I tried to get an event with a local gourmet chocolate store. The business owner was all for it, but alas, I was told that the mall property owner would not allow it. This chocolate store was also told NOT to sell or offer coffee because there were three restaurants in the mall. This owner was apologetic in explaining the policy and said that the restaurants have no coffee on their menus.

One might argue that one could sell a thousand books at your own events, and not get any credibility with the book industry. And that is probably true, as books the author buys are not counted into royalty statements. But, I did learn that one local library event garnered a front page newspaper article, interview, and photo. So, one never knows where things may lead.

This is the latest for THE DOC novel signing events. Saturday November 15, I will be at an outdoor mall at:

POSTAL ANNEX store
6083 N. Figarden Drive, Fresno, California. Time: 8:00 AM.

Yes. Two doors north is a place for tacos. Next door south is a donut shop.
This event is called: A BOOK and a DONUT
If it is chocolate you want, get a book from me, then a chocolate donut and cocoa in the shop.

Civil War Event Signing

Photo for blog - Tim Signing at Kearney Park October 2014
Signing Books at Civil War Revisited 2014 – 150th Atlanta Campaign event – Kearney Park, Fresno

This is posted after the date of October 18 – 19, but that is all right. Since the story in the novel, THE DOC, is about Civil War re-enactors who are in trouble with Homeland Security, a Civil War reenactment is the perfect place to garner followers. This last of the 2014 reenacting season events in the San Joaquin Valley was at Kearney Park in Fresno County and hosted by American Civil War Association and Fresno Historical Society. It commemorated the 25th year of the annual event.

While each year a different battle is depicted, this year being 150 years since the Atlanta Campaign, that was the theme.

Of course the Atlanta Campaign brings up all sorts of images of the most talked about events of those months such as General Sherman’s march to the sea, after, of course, the burning of Atlanta, and the mass market success of the novel and movie Gone With The Wind. As there was so much more than all that, visitors to my discussions were shocked to learn of Western Theater, Army of Tennessee, General Joseph Eggleston Johnston, General William Hardee, and often ignored Generals Daniel Govan, Ben Cheatham, and Patrick Cleburne with their success as they battled at the many locations from Ringgold in early May 1864 to Atlanta by July 22. I was going to tell some of them what I learned from my Arkansan friend Bob H., at Shiloh in ‘07, “Get used to it, you’re in the south.” But, I realized I wasn’t really in the south, but in California. I had to settled on saying , “I could go on” and so that’s it for this, I could go on.

For a few shots of Civil War revisited 25th Anniversary see The Fresno Historical Society’s Facebook page at:: https://www.facebook.com/fresnohistory
Their main website is: http://valleyhistory.org/

For a video of the event see the Fresno Bee online link at: http://www.fresnobee.com/2014/10/18/4186166_25th-anniversary-of-the-civil.html?rh=1

Thank you Fresno Bee, Fresno Historical Society, American Civil War Association, and Civil War Reenactment Society (CWRS) for continuing the living history event. This last event of the season in our area is always a pleasure to be a part of, with the entire involvement of our fellow re-enactors.
There is always more of course. This is not the last of the season’s events in California. While I would love to be in Franklin, Tennessee for November 30th and 150th Franklin, I have to settle for the Moorpark, California event on November 8 and 9, 2014. This is next to Simi Valley where the CA 118 West turns into the CA 23 South. It is at a different location this year at a different nearby ranch.

Sons of Confederate Veterans Genealogy at Fresno Fair

Family - Tim - Fresno Fair 2014

During the thirteen day run of the Big Fresno Fair, a few of us volunteer at the Fresno County Genealogy Society booth in the Home Arts building. While we do help get a few new member prospects for Sons of Confederate Veterans, we do more visiting with folks who sign up for other groups represented there. Those are: German from Russia, Swedish Society, Native Daughters of the Golden West, Afro-American Society, Armenian Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution, Scottish Society, and a few others. The Fresno County Genealogy Society has workers on the second floor of the downtown County Library every week. Many visitors there are surprised by the many ethnic groups represented. While each group may not have a direct member there, there is a display and a signup sheet on a clip board for each group. A lot of people have difficulty finding their roots, but there are many workers willing to help you, with no formal fee as some professional genealogists can charge.

Negative Keywords?

Art - blog photo negative words

Negative Keyword Advice is this topic. This short piece by a fellow on my LinkedIn list is worth passing on, or sharing. I was interested in it as I have my own issues with “tags” and “meta words” or “meta tags.” I still am in a fog on how to use “catagories.” Ryan Joneson’s angle is more directed to the business world of either employees or owners and managers or the business website administrators. But, I thought it – his point – applies to all of us out here in the book promotion and online marketing field.
Go to his link at: https://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20140916163200-49465379-5-tips-for-negative-keywords?trk=eml-ced-b-sum-M-0-8194146265449757961&midToken=AQGB9kAh9LTqmA&fromEmail=fromEmail&ut=0TjvuCAQNKR6o1&_mSplash=1
I’m still learning, after managing my own websites for the past ten years. See what you think. Is this a problem for writers and bloggers?
