A friend also, author Sunny Frazier has a new release. This is the third novel in her Christy Bristol Astrology Mystery series. A Snitch in Time is published by Black Opal Books. Besides her own authorship, Sunny heads up a group of writers and authors called “the Posse” which helps all of us fight the numbers, hone marketing skills, make connections, and increase our knowledge of this endeavor as a business. As a mentor for the art we do, she is a tireless cheerleader for many of us striving to write better and promote better.

Over at the fairly new blog for the San Joaquin chapter of Sisters in Crime – The Mystery Blog of San Joaquin Sisters in Crime – has a concise piece about A Snitch in Time and a bit about Sunny too:

Triggered Book Study

This is the title of a new study just begun. Perhaps it should be a different and longer title, like “top books study” or “book marketing study based on success of best sellers.” Both of those would be accurate as it is triggered on the question of what gets books to the top of sales lists?

I recently came across the success of one author, when having a quiet conversation with the author’s relative at a small family gathering. Keeping that author anonymous for now, it raised a renewal of past questions. The questions have revolved around a series of modes – dear gawd, did I just write, “modes” a dreaded statistical term? Yes. That is a statistical term. It is one of my favorites because it was the easiest to understand. In the relationship of “distribution” of scores, it is part of the three central tendencies. These are mean, median, and mode. Mode is simply the number of the same or identical scores. Fear not. My use of mode is the Random House Webster’s Dictionary version of “method.”

Many of these have been blogged about before by many of you or others, so many of you blog analysts of the past ten or fifteen years may say, “that has all been done before.” But here goes. The series of modes being a part of this are: genre v. main stream, Create Space v. Lightening Source, Amazon v. Ingram’s, Big Houses v. Small houses, Social sites v. media interviews, Self publishing v. publisher.

Ignored for the moment are such things “cover” and “title.” Not because they are not important, they are, but because they are more of a subjective thing and not easily measured or quantified. Also set aside for the moment is ebook v. print book.

Is ebook v. print book fair? Or valid? Perhaps it is only fair to compare sales of the same title means anything. And here is where any study can be thrown out. Actual sales figures are not readily available.
The main method is a brief study of lists themselves. So, That’s the beginning. More in the next
Assuming one thing in common: All the books were well written.

Murder, Fantasy, Zombies and Undead

Part of me doesn’t get it. I realize people are different but it strikes me that a lot of people find the topic fascinating. The spiritual world, and existence of angels or a deity, is denied by the many who do believe in the supernatural evils found in media, film and books in the writings from Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen King, and Peter Straub. There are so many contemporaries writing screenplays and books with these themes. I suppose any mystery and who-done-it story has at its core an evil intent by someone, and a crime is done, and the ensuing solution to bring a criminal to justice.

I sat next to an author and artist once. She wrote books that were illustrated. There is a name of those books style. Entire illustrated novels have a whole section at B & N stores called …. Graphic Novels.
Two movies, Renaissance and Sin City were done in black & white graphics. Very dramatic format. There are ongoing discussions as to the difference between action hero comic book movies and graphic novels. Most action hero movies are in full color.

Horror and monster stories have been around a long time, and the past few years we’ve seen the popular rise of fairy tale themes on TV. And, those are not very nice as they seem to all be more sinister than I read as a child.

Still, what is it about zombies, slashers, and fantasy world spells?

Plot Driven or Character?

As a reader or a movie and video watcher gets through with a viewing or reading a book, one can say, “yeah, I see how that went and fit together.” But as an author and a writer putting things down on paper or in a file ……. It isn’t easy.

A few years back I attended a weekend writer’s conference. One of the speakers was First Blood author David Morrell who gave a great talk on his career, working on the TV show of Route 66, referring to himself as “Rambo’s daddy,” and his original writing motivation of fear. So, when I came across this plot versus character blog by Jodi Henley, discussing First Blood as character driven, then the subsequent movies being plot driven, it was fascinating.

Jodi Henley has a great blog on these topics at: http://jodihenley.blogspot.com/2014/02/how-to-tell-difference-between.html

Henley also discussed the movie The Descendents as another example, and the Die Hard movie. She asks at the end, “so how can you tell what’s what?”

The short conclusion by Jodi Henley as she wrote, “If your character’s motivation to get through the story or do whatever you want him to do flows out of who he is (in back story), then most likely it’s character-driven. If you think you’re going to need a little less input from the peanut galley to get your character from beginning to end, it’s most likely plotted. And I’d suggest either thinning your character out a little so he can fit into the story, or finding a story that fits the character.”
One might argue that these are movies, but, they were books first, and screenplays are written with the same problems. And, story is story no matter what the type of writing it is. An older adage is that “story” is feelings, and “plot” is what a character does.

I suppose many know up front what version/type of their own story they are writing. And many stories are driven by both plot and character. Henley reserved that for another lengthy piece.
An editor once told me to delete anything that did not move the plot. Some back story was kept. But I had too much back story that dragged down the plot.

I’ll repeat the first sentence above: As a reader or a movie and video watcher gets through with a viewing or reading a book, one can say, “yeah, I see how that went and fit together.” But as an author and a writer putting things down on paper or in a file ……. It isn’t easy.

Civil War Event Signing

Photo for blog - Tim Signing at Kearney Park October 2014
Signing Books at Civil War Revisited 2014 – 150th Atlanta Campaign event – Kearney Park, Fresno

This is posted after the date of October 18 – 19, but that is all right. Since the story in the novel, THE DOC, is about Civil War re-enactors who are in trouble with Homeland Security, a Civil War reenactment is the perfect place to garner followers. This last of the 2014 reenacting season events in the San Joaquin Valley was at Kearney Park in Fresno County and hosted by American Civil War Association and Fresno Historical Society. It commemorated the 25th year of the annual event.

While each year a different battle is depicted, this year being 150 years since the Atlanta Campaign, that was the theme.

Of course the Atlanta Campaign brings up all sorts of images of the most talked about events of those months such as General Sherman’s march to the sea, after, of course, the burning of Atlanta, and the mass market success of the novel and movie Gone With The Wind. As there was so much more than all that, visitors to my discussions were shocked to learn of Western Theater, Army of Tennessee, General Joseph Eggleston Johnston, General William Hardee, and often ignored Generals Daniel Govan, Ben Cheatham, and Patrick Cleburne with their success as they battled at the many locations from Ringgold in early May 1864 to Atlanta by July 22. I was going to tell some of them what I learned from my Arkansan friend Bob H., at Shiloh in ‘07, “Get used to it, you’re in the south.” But, I realized I wasn’t really in the south, but in California. I had to settled on saying , “I could go on” and so that’s it for this, I could go on.

For a few shots of Civil War revisited 25th Anniversary see The Fresno Historical Society’s Facebook page at:: https://www.facebook.com/fresnohistory
Their main website is: http://valleyhistory.org/

For a video of the event see the Fresno Bee online link at: http://www.fresnobee.com/2014/10/18/4186166_25th-anniversary-of-the-civil.html?rh=1

Thank you Fresno Bee, Fresno Historical Society, American Civil War Association, and Civil War Reenactment Society (CWRS) for continuing the living history event. This last event of the season in our area is always a pleasure to be a part of, with the entire involvement of our fellow re-enactors.
There is always more of course. This is not the last of the season’s events in California. While I would love to be in Franklin, Tennessee for November 30th and 150th Franklin, I have to settle for the Moorpark, California event on November 8 and 9, 2014. This is next to Simi Valley where the CA 118 West turns into the CA 23 South. It is at a different location this year at a different nearby ranch.

Hated Protagonists Tips

Family - Tim for Blog Post Oct 2014

It was referred to me last August 19, by author and “The Posse” leader Sunny Frazier, but seems important to comment on now, or anytime. This was about “5 Protagonists Readers Hate,” a blog by Anne Allen. Actually the entire title was “5 Protagonists Readers Hate: Why Writers Shouldn’t Identify too Closely with a Main Character.” The discussion, examples, and reasons are an insight for us as readers as well as for writers of fiction. The other interesting point that is made is the related topic of fictionalizing real life experiences. I’m sure there are more lengthy discussions on the topic, but there is so much that is pithy on our craft in this one piece. She titles these 5 types as:

Mary Sue
The Special Victim
Perfect Pat
Looky-Loo
Literal Larry

There is a last section about the “solution” to the problem, but you can read the entire thing and the “solution” at: http://annerallen.blogspot.com/2014/08/5-protagonists-readers-hate-why-writers.html
