Central Coast Writer’s

author-cora-ramos-2016

Cora Ramos posted this yesterday, but to me it is huge, as I could not make it to the Central Coast conference. …. plus her site is beautiful.
I thought that was interesting about the business side, and needing both, but keeping separate … not mixing up.
This is short, so that you may hop over there now at:

E-book Audience Share

auto-chev-wire-diagram

Family -Tim Desmond at Captain Tony's

This didn’t turn out the way I expected. When I was searching for a comparison of an audience share of these type of users of Kindle formats versus Nook readers, naturally the term “reader” did not mean the noun of a person to the search engine in the machine. An interesting site popped up about comparing Kindle tablets to Nook tablets and Kobo. Not exactly what I was looking for but I learned about the virtual ink process or design called “E Ink Display” that allowed for daylight reading and how that works. The site has more product information and comparison at:

Kindle Voyage vs. Nook GlowLight vs. Kobo Aura H2O: Battle of the ebook readers

Also, along this vein ………

https://www.cnet.com/news/kindle-vs-nook-vs-ipad-which-e-book-reader-should-you-buy/
And: ………. https://pickmyreader.com/kindle-paperwhite-vs-nook-glowlight/

Getting back to the main question is there a trend in the users between these three types of e-book readers as an audience?
The answer I found is a year old, October 2015, but is comprehensive in its scope and detail. I could recreate the data and graphs, but why? I’ll just send you to the site which is ……. A must lesson for any author, and, well, any striving writing.
I feel fortunate that my publisher provides most of these platforms. That site is HUGE and at:

Author Marketing

Blog Graphic June 13 - 2016

Yeah. Well, as you can see from the photo, I’ve been at it a while. While I’ve always thought of the business side of being a published author [1st book in December 2005], so much has evolved in the print industry and all digital formats. Borders hadn’t closed yet, back then, and I thought they might have stayed longer as they had this electronic connection with Amazon. There was still one B. Dalton store, and I had plans to do a signing event there, and it closed very quickly in 2007.
Two sites I came across had me changing gears, even though I was already trying to practice some things over the past year. Last year was when I was learning about my fifth cousin’s 50,000 sales of his cross genre science-fiction and fantasy series. He was heavily reviewed and in one of hottest genres ever, both issues where my books are lacking. But, that’s all right, I understand all that.

So the first site is about using hash tags, which was a site I shared on Facebook, because it was from a source I thought I might lose. It is by Erica Verrillo at:
https://publishedtodeath.blogspot.com/2015/04/225-hashtags-for-writers.html?showComment=1465856223346#c5409303558568151096

The second site is a little different and just as intriguing because of its negative premise approach. By Deborah Riley-Magnus, and titled 5 DUMB THINGS SMART AUTHORS DO , it is at:
https://rileymagnus.wordpress.com/2014/09/18/5-dumb-things-smart-authors-do/

Generally, we all have been aware of the term KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE, but the larger problem is REACHING YOUR AUDIENCE. Some of the things may have been touched on others, but one item was really eye-opening about the point of pitching “hooks” instead of genres. I realized when I am at a signing event and a visitor asks about the book, I begin with a hook statement immediately, without knowing their interest quite. So, yeah, it made sense, and there is more there.
What do you think?

Central Valley Talk Interview about Pappy Butler Story

The interview is very short on CENTRALValleytalk.com and the Artists and Authors Show is fairly new in their programming, as it was added in three or four months ago. While there are three others interviewed during the hour, the link below on YouTube is their edited version of only my portion.

Pappy Butler is OUT Now

Art - final cover by Jack - Pappy Butler & His Zero Time Theory

Title: PAPPY BUTLER & HIS ZERO TIME THEORY

High school physics teacher, Pappy Butler, feels he has a handle on a telepathy-type force that transcends distance and time, which he calls “Zero Time Theory,” and has tried for years to get his paper on this theory published. Meanwhile, he’s having marital problems as well as issues at his high school, where he has crossed the principal and superintendent and is falsely accused of negligence and unprofessional behavior for threatening the school librarian, creating the legal definition of a hostile work environment. But it isn’t until Pappy is given a “molecule machine” by another scientist that his troubles really start. Both the government and a rival scientist also want this machine, and they don’t care who they hurt to get it…

Jitters Coffee House

Rifling Of Old Cannon, View On The Inside

Teaming up with me again at another Sanger Art Hop Saturday, will be Steven Hammond. This time we will be at the JITTERS COFFEE HOUSE, at 1317 7th Street, Sanger, CA. This is just half a block off of Academy and 7th Street. We will be there from 10 AM to 4 PM. Yes, it’s a long day. Yes, it’s the Saturday after Christmas Day. Yes, we are signing our books for any who have not ordered before from our publishers or from Amazon or Barnes and Noble. In spite of the fact that places no longer exist in our area like UPSTART CROW, the FORUM coffee house is too far away in Berkeley, and our regional district of the leading coffee places called Starbucks does not allow signing events, here is a place that does. Amazing. Drop by for a coffee and visit and I’ll sign a copy of THE DOC conspiracy thriller for you.

Authors at Sanger Art Hop

Art - Steve Hammond book cover
This is Steve’s banner from his Rise of the Penguin’s site.
As mentioned earlier this event was for Sanger’s Art Hop. It was a cool fall day, and the day after “Black Friday” which in our area makes it called “Small Business Saturday.” Two of us, local authors, made it over to Sanger, California’s “Hinds Hospice Thrift Store” to set up for a six hour day. Yes, a wee bit long from 10:00 to 4:00 but well worth it. Modern fantasy author Steve Hammond signed books and talked about his series The Rise of the Penguins.
Again, the important thing was authors helping each other.

Vetted, Vetting and to Vet

Blog - photo - Vetting blog 2

If you apply for a job, your application is screened. If it meets the prospective employer’s criteria, you may be called for an oral interview. In all of this you are being “vetted.” This isn’t a term used in the past be the private sector in filling vacant positions. The term was usually restricted to government positions or to high security agency positions. It was the process of an intense investigation and scrutiny of the applicant. I could not find a definition in Random Houses Webster’s Dictionary fourth edition Ballantine paperback, nor in the 1,550 page American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Houghton Mifflin Company 1976. But the use of the word “vet” as a verb may be found at various online locations such as:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/vet

It has been a term that I used to see in research articles or books about intelligence agency practices. One of my first memories or awareness of vetting that was used in private industry, was the complaint by established media reporters, news writers, and TV journalists. The complaint was about bloggers. I suppose it was about the time that bloggers were being quoted, on the air. It ran along the lines, that “bloggers are out there in the blog-i-sphere whom we do not know,” and “they are blogging information contrary to what main stream media was reporting,” and, …. “we simply do not know who these people are.” Then, “these bloggers are not vetted,” presumably by the established media. More recently, there was a Brian Lamb C-SPAN “Book Notes” interview of a history professor. The professor complained about the self-published historians who “were not vetted” by the scholarly process of university historians.
There were media bloggers too, but, there was an explosion of “other voices” in the mid 2,000s years. About this time I was interviewed by one agent at a conference. It was short and he seemed to like the book I pitched to him, and he said to “send it to the agency” and to his partner a lead agent. [I thought that was hopeful, but later I realized that I was blown off.] This same agent later hosted and led a breakout session entitled “The Agency –Publisher – Writer Relationship.” His main point during the session was that the “agents vet the writers” for the publishers. There it is. Another angle on all this has been said many times. Also, there was “the catch.” To get traditionally in print by a big house, you need an agent – to get an agent, you need to be published. An agent wants published writers.
An e-world revolution, of sorts, is going on, has been going on. E-writers and self-publishers are by-passing the agent/publisher vetters. Who decides what is good, readable, correct, or entertaining? “Readers” is the obvious answer. The other question is, does this affect the marketing?
And, do your credentials matter?
