Perhaps the national turmoil is getting to me. Cyber threat if tied with global economy, makes me wonder.

Art - Cover - Vengeance is Mine
Gary Wayne Walker cover

This is for author Gary Wayne Walker and his novel Vengeance is Mine released, I believe summer of 2013. He sat at a table with me at the Book Barn event last July. This is a great “noir era” story set in North Hollywood and San Bernardino.

How far is too far when it comes to revenge? In Gary Wayne Walker’s debut thriller, “Vengeance Is Mine,” the answer slowly unravels as families are torn apart and alliances are made. The year is 1949, and Los Angeles is the playground on which Mickey Cohen and his mob have chosen to play.

ABOUT
Prominent divorce attorney Everett Taylor takes on his first murder trial despite his wife’s impassioned pleas to the contrary and is immediately plunged into an underworld from which there is no escape. The case, in which a woman shot and killed her husband upon discovering him in bed with his lover,
quickly throws Taylor’s life into turmoil, bringing him toe to toe with Cohen’s mob while drudging up his own dark past in St. Louis with his first wife. Crippled by polio as a small child, Taylor is now faced with other health issues, mental and physical, along with an increasing tumultuous relationship with his family, including a daughter left behind in St. Louis.
This is a story where loyalty is tested and no one is as they seem. Most importantly, it reveals how the desire for vengeance can ruin the vengeful while inflicting unimaginable collateral damage on innocent bystanders.
“If you’re searching for mystery and intrigue and enjoy fast-paced thrill rides, then buckle up and enter Gary Wayne Walker’s world of Vengeance. His storytelling prowess will captivate your imagination and have you sweating bullets right along with his fascinating cast of characters.”–Armen Bacon, author of “Griefland– An Intimate Portrait of Love, Loss and Unlikely Friendship.”
“Gary Wayne Walker weaves his characters with intricate precision through a meticulously crafted plot. This suspenseful page-turner will leave reader eager for a sequel.”– Janice Stevens, Writing Professor and author of nine California history books.

Paperclip in Paperback

Art - Cover of Annie jacobsen Paperclip Jan 2015

After listening to a radio interview this morning, apparently I am a year late, for the hardbound release. I understand that the paperback is released today for the book Operation Paperclip. I went to the website to catch up.

http://anniejacobsen.com/

This topic was not new to me, but perhaps was last year to many of her fans.

This is January 21, 2015. While listening to the interview this morning, I missed the beginning of it with her. At first I thought she was Linda Hunt on the air, because of her book Secret Agenda [ St Martin’s Press, 1991]. Too, she mentioned things that I had not read or heard before, those being her interviews and the cold war years as “dark times” comments, that were “like now” and as there were “real unanswered questions” then , so are there now.

The late Michael Creighton also wrote a note on the Eisenhower quote to JFK “beware the military-industrial complex” and has said the real “beware” for our era is to beware the “politico-media complex.” He mentions the German scientists – in an appendix to his novel “State of Fear” on page 578 – as going along with the “state [nazi] policies” or they disappeared. Paperclip puts it all together of the need for the cover up at Roswell mushrooming into the UFO mythology, which was supposedly harmless compared to the revealing the truth of the operation, the German interrogations, drug and biological experiments of our own. I alluded to some of this in my novel The Doc revised edition, as I found Secret Agenda answered a lot of questions [1990 – 1991 in the years the “wall came down” in Berlin]. I wish Annie Jacobsen the best with the book, and I’ll get a copy.

Rifling Of Old Cannon, View On The Inside

Carbon Hoax

In 1974 I sat in a college class on Human Ecology. It was a required course for the degree. One of the concerns of the text’s author, and the prof who lectured, was the increase of carbon in the atmosphere. It was something that was there, but not alarming to these students as they had lived through the 1971 Zero Population Growth book popularity by Stanford’s Paul Erlich. Many accepted Erlich’s premise and college men went for sterilization and girls went for the IUDs instead of the birth control pills. The consideration that birth control is “anti-life” seemed not to matter. Since then, there have been many changes. Many starvations around the world, that may or may not have been due to over population, were more likely due to the regional political upheavals.

Bringing the time up to 2006, there appeared in the news the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide as the main culprit in global warming. And so the next new wave of doom which we all have to work to avoid was on. But, it was apparent to me that this was another “anti-life” like Erlich’s ZPG theory, and I sent a short letter to the local paper, which printed it, but received no comments nor counter letters.
Scientists and Universities have been on this for decades.

It was amazing how quickly the globe jumped on this theory. Prince Charles elected to fly to the “States” in a commercial jet, instead of the private jet, in order to “reduce his carbon footprint” in the atmosphere. Amazing.

It is astonishing the growth of the energy business – solar and wind – energy companies new and older power companies financing wind and solar. Do you get calls from and for solar installation?
A cap and trade story Sunday, November 16 – called Carbon Costs, McClatchy article by Dan Walters laments the undisclosed costs to Californians . Buried on page A16 in Fresno Bee’s Sunday issue, Dan Walter itemized a few California finance unknown answers. Some of those were ……. Carbon, cap and trade, renewable energy.

Climate Confusion [Encounter Books, New York, 2008] by climatologist author and warming skeptic Roy Spenser, PhD has been denounced on several websites as a “crank” and his latest paper as “failed to prove his point.” Read his site at: http://www.drroyspencer.com/
But, that reminds me something my editor said once. One of my book’s characters wrote a paper a paper on government control and exposed a domestic black ops unit. I was informed that my premise was not credible because retired CIA consultants had said the author would be denounced, discredited and to be shown to be quite a fool and a crank. Sound familiar? Exactly how Roy Spencer is being treated.
President Eisenhower warned President Kennedy about the “military-industrial complex.” Roy Spenser warned, beware of the “political-media” complex.

The Doc original Two eBook Trailers

Art -Cover for Blog smaller DBI
THE NEW COVER – PRINT REVISED EDITION

This is sort of silly, as I found this piece buried in the draft column – from December 2012. One friend made the observation after viewing the first, longer trailer, that it was “kinda crazy” and “I liked it.” I never pulled either one down. But until the new print version “The Doc revised edition” book trailer is up, these two are still about the basic story.

The Doc - modified%Two versions of this book trailer are on Youtube, and both were severely edited. The first one was around two and half minutes long and needed to have shortened amount of running time. Youtube edited out some of what I thought were important shots. The second version that I sent in was a one minute-forty second version. Youtube cut that version down to thirty-two seconds. Available here is that version in its entirety, 1:40 seconds.

I have heard both pro and con views on the value of book trailers. One editor/writer colleague told me that book trailers were nice but didn’t really help. Yet, another marketing and promotions guru lists books trailers as one of the seven basic needs.

Anyway here is: The Doc Book Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lIAhN6Mhg4

The first longer trailers is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxq6azhqNF8

The Doc Author Interview

Art -Cover for Blog smaller DBI

Two weeks ago was the author interview I did on Central Valley Talk.com’s show called “Let’s Talk Business” hosted by Mike Scott. I realize that many either could not watch it on a normal work day at 1:00 PM Pacific Time, and “live,” or had other difficulty finding the site.
Here it is on You Tube, with no headline, no ads, and the book’s cover at the end.

One viewer commented to me later that I gave too much of the story away. However, the publisher, Black Opal Books, has said more in the brief blurb on the cover and bookmarks. The blurb, and excerpt, are also at the page:

Infanticide

Infanticide.

This is a topic which brings up a memory of a distant college course I was in 1973. I as a zoology major and one of the required upper division/major courses was Human Ecology. The big issues for the previous early 70s years in biology and spilled out to the media was Stanford’s professor Erlich’s population control book ZPG – Zero Population Growth. This title wasn’t our text, but our text for the course was heavy with the same rational. One section gave a history – curiously from Africa – about the cultures that practiced infanticide as a method of their population control.

Read Janette Raleigh’s WordPress blog Legislating Morality – Infantacide

at : http://jeanetteraleigh.wordpress.com/2012/08/20/legislating-morality-infantacide/#respond

Yes. During the lecture on this topic, the young, first year professor lost control of this class discussion, to some degree, as many in the class questioned this along many avenues from morality to legality. I understood that he, the prof, was presenting the concept as an adjunct of the text, but the students speaking up were vocal in rejecting the premise. I thought he had done all right in stating that it wasn’t his personal belief, but he soon left the room. When he did not return, the college president came in to address us about our poor treatment of the instructor. It was a memorable experience seeing that session unfold.

Your question also about “what’s next, the elderly…” is exactly where Nazi Germany took things in the 1930’s with their “medical solution” of euthanizing those infirmed and feeble minded. [The Nazi Doctors by Robert Jay Lifton]. This was legal there and before the war and before the camps and the final solution.

For the life of me I do not see why more people do not see the “population control” mentality as anti-life as a concept. This is exactly what is flawed about the carbon dioxide, CO2, emission restrictions. CO2 is a product of the living, and a need of plants like we need oxygen. The “carbon footprint” concept and people that push that are anti-life. I wrote that to our local paper four years ago. While the letter was printed it had no responses. Main stream media accepts the “carbon problem” as do many legislators. Prince Charles worried aloud about taking the commercial jet to the “states” instead of the Royal jet in order to “reduce the carbon foot print.” I think they are all mad. Can one vote madness out of office? I hope so.

Government Control

The question of whether or not the Affordable Care Act is excessive is continuing to be debated, since first introduced two years ago. Now after Chief Justice John Roberts opinion and his published rational, speaks to the very question of constitutionality of the “Act.” But, that was what was said before, years before.

Here is a question about what may affect writers in this area. If government does it, does that make it legal? And if legal, does that make it not a conspiracy?

Recent letters to editors of newspapers about the “Affordable Care Act” have been commenting on Chief Justice Roberts’ opinion. Two years ago the arguments, pro and con, were based on the “commerce clause” affects. Republicans were,  then and again, criticized for wanting to deny the health care to the less fortunate among us. It was rare if any writer opposed the “The Act” on the basis of “rejecting the premise” of its need.

If we were to inspect the medical system, both nationwide and statewide, we would find that indigent care is paid for, by the various counties and hospitals, and also by Medical, and national Medicaid.  It is also true that certain procedures are denied by insurance coverage and denied by Medicare insurance also. The point is that Medicare and insurance is not free. There are premiums to pay. Medical and Medicaid are not free either. The taxpayers pay those.

Why then was “Affordable Care Act” needed? As others have said, if the cost of health care providers is given as a reason, that problem is not addressed by “The Act.” Consider that if the 1860 – 61 secession of southern states was over the inability of the Federal Union to apply the “Commerce clause” fairly, if at all, to the southern states,  the Federal Union went to war over those very tax issues of their day. Every major constitutional problem and our, since then, modern states’ rights issues comes from that increased Federalization. Where do the states and individuals go now?

I will address some of those answers to that question later. Maybe after some of you reply and comment.

Europe Thriller

 Europe thriller as subplots?

Maybe financial thrillers are only Wall Street screenplays and sequels, and yet it only seems like yesterday that the late Michael Crichton book “Rising Sun” was on the shelves. The business-as-war premise of that story was also connected to the leading edge of the digital technology of that time.  Also, back when, Tom Clancy’s “Executive Orders” had as a sub-plot, the financial meltdown caused by system hackers. In the very real 1999 “dot-com” crash, and then the 2007-2008 very real “sub-prime mortgage” financial meltdown, we learned more about the complicated the global financial network.

For the past three years,  I’ve been telling friends about the European news of DW network – Deutsch Welle – German news. It is carried in our area on the Catholic channel 49, at 7:00 PM PDT local, for thirty minutes. Include with the DOW index, is DAX stock index , which is the Deutsche exchange in Frankfurt, and the Euro exchange index out of Bonn.

Three years ago the DW-German news anchors were reporting on the US sub-prime mortgage financial decline. Germany had its own business decline going on. As one example Nokia there downsized and moved out.  The Germans were worried about how the US losses or the result of the bailouts would affect the euro and their economy. Since then, German industry has bounced back while Greece, Spain, Italy and France economies are in trouble. Then, the Euro group bailed out Greece. This past week Spain was bailed out. On June 12, Sean Hannity, on his radio program, voiced his concern and worry, if not alarm, about the Europe economy affecting the US economy in the years ahead. 20% of our exports are European markets.

I have to wonder where the media has been? True, this stuff is not carried on “network” news. We don’t live in a global vacuum.  http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSL5E8HDB6420120613?irpc=932

Some might have the view that we caused the European economic crisis. Until, one learned that Spain has their “sub-prime mortgage” crisis going on. According to Ben Stein, interviewed on Fox news this week, the German banks own the bonds in Spain, Greece, and Italy. [Italy may default next]. The US banks own the German banks. Stein says, “Read my book.” http://www.benstein.com/stein2html

It seems that there could be a lot here for European set crime/thrillers, and home financial crime/ thrillers too.  What do you think? Fodder for subplots in family or crime stories?
