The Buzz Interview

As for the results of the “A BOOK AND A DONUT” signing event, sales were GREAT, and as good as the BOOK BARN event in July. But, I did more talking about the book to more visitors than at the Clovis Book Barn. The other plus was that the store wanted The Doc books to sell from the “point of sale” counter.

This “THE BUZZ Interview” BLOG that I wrote last week was meant to be posted BY ME that Thursday, afternoon, with a photo, video link or YouTube link of the interview. I never got it posted last week. As it turned out I did not get a video of it. I thought it was a better interview than the one done two days previous, but that was my wife’s impression of my answers. But here is what happened. After the Tuesday interview, I was offered the Thursday interview, and I opted for the “Full Media” package. This was their highest package. The original broadcast time is live and covers a large area of the valley and a huge “antenna receiver” audience. This on KAIL My 7.1, Comcast 13, Satellite 53, and AT&T U-verse 53. This was “live” at 10:00 am and the show reruns at 4:00 pm at the http://www.centralvalleytalk.com, which is the web streaming show.

I thought a disk was being provided because I had checked for that on the sign-up sheet on Tuesday. At the end of the Thursday interview, I was told I could have a disk of it, but that it was for another fee. I declined that and explained that I would have to sell fifty books to break even with full media package as it was. I also explained that I have no idea what the results would be in my sales, or the numbers who show up at the event pitched in the interview as A Book and a Donut for the coming Saturday.

But, I did save it, the interview, at the home TV on DVR, and too, it is going to take saving it on an old VCR tape and then converting that to digital. So, it could not be done for Thursday afternoon.

For a YouTube of the first interview with Mike Scott, here it is again. ..

Perhaps two interviews in one week were too many to blog about.

And on the cost, is this why authors are advised to not pay for ads?

Study of Posting Stats

road question
What’s the best?

I check my WordPress stats and the Klout stats. But, is that enough?
While I’ve tried to figure some of the results of my own efforts, there seems no end “what works best advice.” This seems zeroed in with the data, and I do believe one must measure one’s own results. Too, you should do more than one variable at a time. If you got a spike in response, you wouldn’t know what caused it for sure.

If it is all right, I’d like to boost this topic and refer all of you to a BOOK TOWN posting at:
http://booktown.ning.com/forum/topics/a-scientific-guide-to-posting-tweets-facebook-posts-emails-and-bl?xg_source=msg_mes_network

Thanks again Belle Beth Cooper at BOOK TOWN for a post that has all of us studying in the blog-a-sphere.

If you have more questions, contact me.

Wards of the State – Data Collection v. Privacy

Experimental File October 2013

In researching for conspiracy theories, there seems to be no end. Using the theories as a story basis is hardly new, but one wonders if it is fiction any more. And of the old joke question about paranoia, “are you still paranoid If it’s true?” seems less funny these days. My driving was careful on the morning commute, yet while breaking to avoid a crash ahead, hot coffee spilled out of the loose travel mug lid. The odor of the splattered coffee was wonderful as I waited for the traffic to clear. In the predawn light during the wait, I turned up the radio volume. A caller was explaining that she turned off her telephone’s GPS app so she could not be tracked. The radio host explained to her that it really doesn’t matter if it’s off, that you can be located anyway. She was surprised and did not know that.
In the news and talk shows these past few days there have been the various takes on the “data collection” by various entities. Whether they are government types of the IRS, NSA, HUD, FHA, Social Security or in the private sector of your doctor’s office, employer, mortgage companies, telephone companies, credit card companies, social media companies, or search engine entities such as Google, Yahoo, or others. This morning was a statement from one media personality that “it is a done deal.” This being, or meaning, that the entire country if, not global, is already locked into the culture of the electronic technology and all the communication that is related in storage of the records and information. It is only a matter of how the data is controlled, and who controls it.
A year ago I had a frank discussion with one of my doctors. Out of respect for privacy, I won’t name the physician. There was a change in the doctor’s office system. I asked if it was because of the new regulations. The answer was partly yes. I mentioned then in the conversation, also the fact that a well known tax preparing company now has questions about one’s medical insurance that is part of the new IRS regulations as part of the Affordable Health Act. The doctor said he had not heard of that. I then asked the doctor if he didn’t think that the new regulations violated the federal HIPPA regulations, which are supposed to be in place to guard medical privacy. There was a moment of silence, and then he said, “I guess we all will no longer have that privacy.” I found the doctor’s comment disturbing. But, after today, I think I am the one that is the more naïve. The NSA thing was never news to me after 1986. But, the massive record sharing by entities of our telephone communication, banks, government, then also by the largest search engine companies tied to government agencies, is …. Please excuse the cliché …. “mind boggling.”
Usually I have links in these pieces. Just, Google or Yahoo any of the above items …… hah ……………
I sometimes am afraid to search some issues in my novel research. But, too, if it’s a “done deal” what more harm can be done? One might ask where it will all lead or end. But, the concern over conspiracies, “urban legends” nonsense, and any other movies and TV crap about any of this seems trivial, trite, and too late. Are we all to become “wards of the state?” Do you like this? Is this a done deal?

Conspiracy – again?

Art - cover The Doc
This book cover will no longer be able to be used, as the contract for the e-book has been terminated. If some of you, fans, had tried recently to buy it on Amazon, from either my author page or from Amazon books, it is no longer there. That is because the ebook was the publisher’s property. I am not supposed to use the cover for promotion as the cover art is the publisher’s property. I understand that the the publisher even “owns” the edited version, even though I have it copyrighted in my name. That’s not a huge problem as I can re-edit it myself. Am currently seeking a print publisher. The Doc story may be available, again, soon, with a different title and in an edited version.
And that brings up the conspiracy thriller premise of the story. The questions still persist, I suppose, in the somewhat current news of the day. Regarding acts, actions, operations, hacking private personal accounts and data systems, NSA business, security v. privacy …..
If it’s true, is it a conspiracy?
If it’s legal, is it a conspiracy?
If government does it, is it a conspiracy?
