Pappy Butler is OUT Now

Art - final cover by Jack - Pappy Butler & His Zero Time Theory

Title: PAPPY BUTLER & HIS ZERO TIME THEORY

High school physics teacher, Pappy Butler, feels he has a handle on a telepathy-type force that transcends distance and time, which he calls “Zero Time Theory,” and has tried for years to get his paper on this theory published. Meanwhile, he’s having marital problems as well as issues at his high school, where he has crossed the principal and superintendent and is falsely accused of negligence and unprofessional behavior for threatening the school librarian, creating the legal definition of a hostile work environment. But it isn’t until Pappy is given a “molecule machine” by another scientist that his troubles really start. Both the government and a rival scientist also want this machine, and they don’t care who they hurt to get it…

All versions, digital and print, for this book are available from Black Opal Books author page for Tim at:

Jitters Coffee House

Rifling Of Old Cannon, View On The Inside

Teaming up with me again at another Sanger Art Hop Saturday, will be Steven Hammond. This time we will be at the JITTERS COFFEE HOUSE, at 1317 7th Street, Sanger, CA. This is just half a block off of Academy and 7th Street. We will be there from 10 AM to 4 PM. Yes, it’s a long day. Yes, it’s the Saturday after Christmas Day. Yes, we are signing our books for any who have not ordered before from our publishers or from Amazon or Barnes and Noble. In spite of the fact that places no longer exist in our area like UPSTART CROW, the FORUM coffee house is too far away in Berkeley, and our regional district of the leading coffee places called Starbucks does not allow signing events, here is a place that does. Amazing. Drop by for a coffee and visit and I’ll sign a copy of THE DOC conspiracy thriller for you.

Authors at Sanger Art Hop

Art - Steve Hammond book cover
This is Steve’s banner from his Rise of the Penguin’s site.
As mentioned earlier this event was for Sanger’s Art Hop. It was a cool fall day, and the day after “Black Friday” which in our area makes it called “Small Business Saturday.” Two of us, local authors, made it over to Sanger, California’s “Hinds Hospice Thrift Store” to set up for a six hour day. Yes, a wee bit long from 10:00 to 4:00 but well worth it. Modern fantasy author Steve Hammond signed books and talked about his series The Rise of the Penguins.
Again, the important thing was authors helping each other.

Author Earnings Report

Triggered Book Study 3 could have been this title. Now I keep getting these things. For those of you who think all authors are raking in the cash, you may have cause to reflect on the reality of the publisher percentages. This came from another conversation with science-fiction author John Daulton. Turns out it is also another Hugh Howey comment. But, enough of the chatter, just hop over to the 2015 Author Earnings Report:

http://authorearnings.com/report/may-2015-author-earnings-report/

As usual, the data is graphic and easy to interpret. Plus, it is another learning experience just reading the comments. Fascinating.

The Posse

I’m in a posse. I have been for a while. We are lead by our author friend Sunny Frazier. We first met at an author event at Chowchilla Library. I am not sure if the “The Posse” was formed at that time or not until later. Somehow I was in. We have a main concept of using some sort of clout with improving our promotions and marketing, as well as entertaining one another.
One of those tools is blogging. For example we were referred to another blog and author by Anne R. Allen. In a recent blog by Anne R. Allen, there is a list of ten reasons to blog. While all the points there are good and right, Number 9 had struck me. First I had to look up what “garret” meant. I know, I know, but it is what it is. I was working the day job, and there was only one other writer on our staff, and he was published with a Carnegie-Mellon award. He told me that writers need to be around other writers. I understood that, but it wasn’t something that could change the situation, without relocating, quitting work, and, well, all the impossibilities. It was something that grew though. He had started a blog because his friends had told him that he should. That was around 2003. He didn’t up date it as often as he could or should have. But I never forgot his advice.
Anne R. Allen’s piece is at:

http://annerallen.blogspot.com/2015/04/ten-reasons-for-authors-to-blog.html#comment-form

I’m not sure how many are in The Posse, maybe twenty or forty authors and writers. There might be more. For another up close visit, Sunny Frazier has a lot going on and blogging on five sites. See more about Sunny at:

Pool Boy Day

Blog photo - Pool Equip Pool Boy Apr 21

Have not written anything in over a week. Sounds like a personal problem, and it was, or still is. Story here? Today I am back to being “Pool Boy” again. Six month cleaning of filter tank is the norm. Last summer I rebuilt the backwash valve stack. It leaked from the top seal. Now, I can’t remove the backwash valves to do a new repair. Pool is running and clean, but, still have the leak. May have to call a guy.

Triggered Best Seller Results

Here it is

genre v. main stream fiction
As has been quoted by some others, “main stream is a genre” I get it. Humor me a little and hang in here. Some definitions may have to be a judgment call. Genre being Crime, suspense, thriller, chiller, fantasy, science fiction, childrens,….
On Febraury 1, 2015-
New York Times best sellers top 15 fiction:
Genre 9
Main Stream 6
Amazon
Genre 8
Main Stream 4
Barnes and Noble
Genre 10
Main Stream 6
Totals:
Genre 27 = 63%
Main Stream 16 = 37%
Chart Genre v Main Stream

New York Times best sellers top 15 Non-fiction is a separate list while Amazon and Barnes and Noble combine all of these.

Create Space Print v. Lightning Source
This is also tough, and maybe impossible, but for a broad generalization Create Space is Amazon and Lightening Source is “all other” self publishing for this purpose. Too, will take longer to check. This is, as one book seller said once, interesting. While traditional print-on-demand [POD} publishers have used Lightning Source for quite a while, now many small and “Indy” publishers are using Create Space digital print options. And self publishers can use Lightning Source too, as well as Create Space.

Distribution differences? …….. Amazon v. Ingram’s
Biggest problem here is the sources and numbers, as actual sales are closely held data by the entities. Checking on an industry source [February 5, 2015].

Big Houses v. Small houses
New York Times List
Large House 10
Small House 3

Chart Author Brand name v Lesser known author

Fiction v. nonfiction
This may be the tougher area, and not as important except on the issue: if one has money to buy books, etc., etc., etc. Even if we read both, it is subjective to most of us, and people usually lean toward one or the other. Since actual sales figures from the industry are generally not public, and NYT list separates all lists into fiction and non-fiction lists, the Amazon or B&N list may be all we have to go by. Publisher house by house may have their hard data. If anyone out there knows, feel free to comment.

[[[ Social media sites v. Real media interviews ….NOT DONE ]]]

Ignored for the moment
“cover” and “title” [subjective ???????? ]
New York Times list only: Hardcover v. Paperback Trade v. Paperback Mass Market
ebook v. print book
NYT includes in a combined list but separates Fiction & Nonfiction
The New York Times offers a glimpse for this comparison because they list top 15 books in “combined ebook and print” categories. Too, NYT does separate these list sby fiction and nonfiction. Checking on another study of this [February 5, 2015].
~
The main question originally is “What are the authors doing to get on the top of lists?”
[March 22, 2015 ……… A few days ago I had interview answers from John Daulton that addresses this question ……….. at least from one author’s – one successful author – experience.]
My question was, What do you think is more important: A great story, a great cover, or a great promotion?
Read John Daulton’s answer in his interview which goes live on April 2.

Author’s Den Anew

This is something that has been neglected. I went on Author’s Den a while back, and it was an initial exposure -online – for me when the first book came out. What I did not realize back then, was that I could have began blogging on that site. I did not. here is a new beginning there with the reblog of one of the most viewed of mine in the past …On Nervousness Metaphor.
