Madera Local Authors Day

Madera Local Authors Day is on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Madera County Library at 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Those authors to be there are: Glenna Jarvis, J. Guibor, “Paul & Marcia,” Carol Wolf, K. Adler, Joe Ozier, Lucille Apcar, Marilyn Meredith, Jennifer Moss, L.G. Flores, Doug Hansen, Tim Desmond.
If there are others there also, I did not get the information. These dozen are supposed to be paired at six tables. Too, there is unfinished construction on the main entrance, so the side street door may be the location to enter.
I was told by another author that this is a good gig.

If you have more questions, please contact Ellen Mester, Madera County Librarian.

Other Author 3

Sunny’s latest cover

A friend also, author Sunny Frazier has a new release. This is the third novel in her Christy Bristol Astrology Mystery series. A Snitch in Time is published by Black Opal Books. Besides her own authorship, Sunny heads up a group of writers and authors called “the Posse” which helps all of us fight the numbers, hone marketing skills, make connections, and increase our knowledge of this endeavor as a business. As a mentor for the art we do, she is a tireless cheerleader for many of us striving to write better and promote better.

Over at the fairly new blog for the San Joaquin chapter of Sisters in Crime – The Mystery Blog of San Joaquin Sisters in Crime – has a concise piece about A Snitch in Time and a bit about Sunny too:

Paperclip in Paperback

Art - Cover of Annie jacobsen Paperclip Jan 2015

After listening to a radio interview this morning, apparently I am a year late, for the hardbound release. I understand that the paperback is released today for the book Operation Paperclip. I went to the website to catch up.

http://anniejacobsen.com/

This topic was not new to me, but perhaps was last year to many of her fans.

This is January 21, 2015. While listening to the interview this morning, I missed the beginning of it with her. At first I thought she was Linda Hunt on the air, because of her book Secret Agenda [ St Martin’s Press, 1991]. Too, she mentioned things that I had not read or heard before, those being her interviews and the cold war years as “dark times” comments, that were “like now” and as there were “real unanswered questions” then , so are there now.

The late Michael Creighton also wrote a note on the Eisenhower quote to JFK “beware the military-industrial complex” and has said the real “beware” for our era is to beware the “politico-media complex.” He mentions the German scientists – in an appendix to his novel “State of Fear” on page 578 – as going along with the “state [nazi] policies” or they disappeared. Paperclip puts it all together of the need for the cover up at Roswell mushrooming into the UFO mythology, which was supposedly harmless compared to the revealing the truth of the operation, the German interrogations, drug and biological experiments of our own. I alluded to some of this in my novel The Doc revised edition, as I found Secret Agenda answered a lot of questions [1990 – 1991 in the years the “wall came down” in Berlin]. I wish Annie Jacobsen the best with the book, and I’ll get a copy.

The Doc Author Interview

Art -Cover for Blog smaller DBI

Two weeks ago was the author interview I did on Central Valley Talk.com’s show called “Let’s Talk Business” hosted by Mike Scott. I realize that many either could not watch it on a normal work day at 1:00 PM Pacific Time, and “live,” or had other difficulty finding the site.
Here it is on You Tube, with no headline, no ads, and the book’s cover at the end.

One viewer commented to me later that I gave too much of the story away. However, the publisher, Black Opal Books, has said more in the brief blurb on the cover and bookmarks. The blurb, and excerpt, are also at the page:

This is short as it is the major announcement. All important sites are below.

Sensory Deprivation

Sensory Deprivation

There was a recent blog on this topic. The site has many provocative and interesting posts. I read this one with interest. You may find it at:

http://zazenlife.com/2012/08/22/the-sensory-deprivation-tank-video/

I get the premise and the rational as proposed by having oneself be suspended into that certain state of awareness or unawareness . As with TM, or even Zen, I am not a huge subscriber to the value of it all. I am sure that many may embrace this with wild acclaim. In a clinical setting, such as patients in a long term Intensive Care situation, “sensory deprivation” as such is considered a negative thing for the patient. So I don’t think it is such a healthy idea. I’ve also alluded, in one novel, to the clandestine use of “non-invasive” sensory deprivation in the “breaking down” of prisoners, detainees, or others being interrogated. This was for extracting information. Is that a non-water boarding torture? Either way, if not dangerous, as a misuse, I think it is not healthy. Call me old school. Some new ideas aren’t always good. If you go to that site and check it out, I’d be curious to know your reaction. What do you think?

The Rich

The rich have been in the news since the “Occupy” sit-ins.  Well, further back than that of course. Currently the 1% is being blogged about and referred to in “social media” circles.  Is it important to writers? Possibly.  Bookstores are affected by the economy and market trends. I got fairly beat up on a social media comment reply that went five or six rounds. The topic was the 1% and their fair share. You can see where this was going. The other person didn’t believe my point. It came down to neither accepting the other’s premise of the issue, referring to “anti-business” and the 1% rich not paying their “fair share”.  My first response is, “quit complaining and change the tax code.” We know how tough that is. I know there is rich and then there is “the rich.”  Are bookstores rich? Are independent shop owners the rich? Are publishers, the largest press houses a part of the 1%? The other economic factor ignored is that anyone’s money is not a static entity. One spends it. On might save or invest a certain percent. That invested amount gets spent in the other funds of those institutions. The spending goes to others in the local, state businesses, and across the country in online purchases. The money doesn’t stay. The rich, the 1% money gets spent too, back into system near and far, to businesses for purchases. The money they park is going into other earning funds.
I recall an F. Scott Fitzgerald and Hemingway anecdote. Scott said, “I think there is something very different and special about the rich, don’t you?” Hem replied, “Yes. The rich have more money.”

That’s a good example of differing POV between artists in their time. And as the saying goes, “less is more,” they speak volumes. The so-called 1% aren’t any different from us.

Another starving artist signing off here.
