Figures of Speech

A few years back, in an early blog, was a discussion of a metaphor for nervousness. It seemed that it had received a lot of response over “butterflies in the tummy” type of cliché and writing something new. What might have been reported in following blogs as a list of possible inventive examples never happened. Perhaps it was expected to appear here, but, I confess, I did not report that. What I can say is that while there was a huge response of viewer numbers, there were no comments from those readers.

Perhaps there was nothing more to say. But, it always irks me, somewhat, when I read a new author and there appears in the text a cliché of ancient metaphor or simile. I may have mentioned that if one must use a simile, then try to be original. There was a TV episode of M*A*S*H once, when Colonel Potter used a half dozen terms, consonance, and alliteration all for substitutions for a clump of horse manure. Funny episode.

It is also comical in the advice of Strunk & White’s book, The Elements of Style, [Macmillan Company 1959], Chapter V, page 66, … “Use figures of speech sparingly.” And, .. “similes coming in rapid fire, one on top of another, are more distracting than illuminating.” There was something more about not mixing up metaphors by using different comparisons for the same object.

The important thing is to be inventive and original, which is not easy. It is work, and there is simultaneous invention by others. Still the best advice holds. TRY to be ORIGINAL.

No, I don’t have butterflies in my tummy, and by the way is “tummy” a chick term, instead of stomach? But, I do admit I am a bit of a wreck at the beginning of an interview. It’s not jitters, but something else. More like … like edgy loins.

Iris of Roberts Ranch

Copy of Blog - Photo - Iris of Roberts Ranch - Apr 2017

There was an older photo or two of the iris plants, planted by my mother. I had done several shots of them in black and white with a 35mm Argus. Most people will not know or care that I shot those with Tri-X and Plus-X and experimented with using several different Wratten color filters. The plants were in an isolated corner of the fence on the west side of the house, near a strip of half dry Bermuda lawn. There was a bit of barbed wire on one side and white boards on the other side, of the clump of four or five bulbs in flower. My guess is that it was around 1962 that I made that study.

We had moved there in 1959, to the 1880s era farm house of the grain ranch. I left for college in September 1964 and never moved back. The folks were there until 1972. The address was then 24245 Raymond Road, and the property has a great Madera County history and is now in ruin. It was quite an operation with large chicken coops and a new feed barn on the north edge of the ranch group, a granary barn, a bunkhouse, blacksmith shop. A dairy and stock barn was on the east edge of the place, which barn was “the shop” when we were there. That’s where I began welding and doing metal sculpture. I witnessed that barn burning down at the end of harvest in August 1964. Mom liked violets, and is perhaps why she liked iris. I never discussed that with her, but perhaps it was because of the pre-World War II Madera High School colors of being Purple & White. So, here it is Easter and iris seems right. Iris always reminds me of The Roberts Ranch.

“The Doc” book Reboot

Rifling Of Old Cannon, View On The Inside

The Doc novel reboot was the main topic of this short interview on Central Valley Talk’s  live stream webcast of Authors and Artists segment on Thursday March 30.  I also gave the host, Carole, a signed copy of the Pappy Butler novel as the last time on her show I had not received my copies of the book. A brief blurb about Pappy Butler & His Zero Time Theory is retold to Carole. Black Opal Books publisher is also mentioned. While the sequel to The Doc book is titled Delete DOC, and is briefly summarized, not too much is given away. Carole Love Forbes is a gracious host in this short ten minute segment at:

Authors & Artists

Art - final cover by Jack - Pappy Butler & His Zero Time Theory

New this year at Madera County Library’s Author’s Day is the inclusion of works of art done by the various authors participating. I have to admit, right up front, that I had nothing to do with this event, now called “Authors and Artists Day.” It will be in two weeks on Saturday February 4 at Madera County Library main Branch, 121 North G Street, Madera, California.

So, this event kicks off the spring book tour for Pappy Butler & His Zero Time Theory. Plus The Confederate flag painting called The Attack which I painted in 2015 will be on display there too. Besides seeing this painting, which is not small at 48 x 48 inches, it will be interesting to meet other authors and seeing any other art being shown. To view The Attack painting up close, mark your calendars and come on down, Saturday February 4.

Hacking & Media

Interesting stuff this morning. On the news, there was a release of actor’s video encouraging the 2016 electors to vote their conscience, as their view of the US Constitution. Also the Intelligence community refusing to respond to a Congressional request for a closed door Intelligence Committee briefing on hacking. Also the news of the 2013 hacking of Yahoo. On top of that a short mention of hacking pointing to Turkey not Russia.

On the first point, there was also a brief mention that NOBODY is listening to or watching the major media. On the second point, the actors are asking the electors to ignore the will of the people in their respective states. The intel community is, well, who the hell knows, right? But the Yahoo thing hits closer to home. But, why released this now, three years later? Now, we don’t have a Yahoo account per se, but have AT&T.net, which uses Yahoo, so I suppose that means us. We have been hacked in the past. Yes, and our Facebook page also.

The email hacking is interesting because here is a history of our hacking which seems to coincide with the 2013 thing: January 7, 2013, September 18, 2014, April 17, 2015, June 30, 2016, December 6, 2016. I cannot remember the dates of the two Facebook hackings, but have received many phishing requests from hacked friend sites.

The Turkey location piece did ring a bell also. Our VISA was hacked last February and it was from a source in Instanbul, Turkey. So, yeah, that news was interesting, personally. Our VISA was also hacked again this past October from a store in Stanislaus County which is ninety minutes north. We have no control of protecting ourselves from institutional or business systems like Home Depot, VISA, and Target.

Regarding major news media? I quit watching them as a source years ago. But, that’s just me, one guy.

Merry Christmas.

Swim the Red River

art-swim-nov-26
The new cover……..

This is the new cover for Swim the Red River. It should be noted that the story takes place before the advent of robotic surgery for radical or total prostatectomy. That being said, it is also a flashback love story. As a short story it could also be a screenplay. On Amazon at:

Pappy on a Roll

Art - final cover by Jack - Pappy Butler & His Zero Time Theory
Cover by JACK at Black Opal Books

Today’s interview was the second time for the novel PAPPY BUTLER & HIS ZERO TIME THEORY on Central Valley Talk studio in Fresno, California. It ran longer than planned as two other guests in the hour did not show. Besides the talk about the Pappy Butler story for any new viewers, I told a little bit more about Pappy’s theory. The other thing mentioned was the upcoming sequel to THE DOC novel, with answers to loose ends from that book. Called DELETE DOC, it is scheduled for release in May or June. There is no cover design yet. There is more on …….. Enough. The interview is on YOUTUBE at:

Central Coast Writer’s

author-cora-ramos-2016

Cora Ramos posted this yesterday, but to me it is huge, as I could not make it to the Central Coast conference. …. plus her site is beautiful.
I thought that was interesting about the business side, and needing both, but keeping separate … not mixing up.
This is short, so that you may hop over there now at:

E-book Audience Share

auto-chev-wire-diagram

Family -Tim Desmond at Captain Tony's

This didn’t turn out the way I expected. When I was searching for a comparison of an audience share of these type of users of Kindle formats versus Nook readers, naturally the term “reader” did not mean the noun of a person to the search engine in the machine. An interesting site popped up about comparing Kindle tablets to Nook tablets and Kobo. Not exactly what I was looking for but I learned about the virtual ink process or design called “E Ink Display” that allowed for daylight reading and how that works. The site has more product information and comparison at:

Kindle Voyage vs. Nook GlowLight vs. Kobo Aura H2O: Battle of the ebook readers

Also, along this vein ………

https://www.cnet.com/news/kindle-vs-nook-vs-ipad-which-e-book-reader-should-you-buy/
And: ………. https://pickmyreader.com/kindle-paperwhite-vs-nook-glowlight/

Getting back to the main question is there a trend in the users between these three types of e-book readers as an audience?
The answer I found is a year old, October 2015, but is comprehensive in its scope and detail. I could recreate the data and graphs, but why? I’ll just send you to the site which is ……. A must lesson for any author, and, well, any striving writing.
I feel fortunate that my publisher provides most of these platforms. That site is HUGE and at:

Author Marketing

Blog Graphic June 13 - 2016

Yeah. Well, as you can see from the photo, I’ve been at it a while. While I’ve always thought of the business side of being a published author [1st book in December 2005], so much has evolved in the print industry and all digital formats. Borders hadn’t closed yet, back then, and I thought they might have stayed longer as they had this electronic connection with Amazon. There was still one B. Dalton store, and I had plans to do a signing event there, and it closed very quickly in 2007.
Two sites I came across had me changing gears, even though I was already trying to practice some things over the past year. Last year was when I was learning about my fifth cousin’s 50,000 sales of his cross genre science-fiction and fantasy series. He was heavily reviewed and in one of hottest genres ever, both issues where my books are lacking. But, that’s all right, I understand all that.

So the first site is about using hash tags, which was a site I shared on Facebook, because it was from a source I thought I might lose. It is by Erica Verrillo at:
https://publishedtodeath.blogspot.com/2015/04/225-hashtags-for-writers.html?showComment=1465856223346#c5409303558568151096

The second site is a little different and just as intriguing because of its negative premise approach. By Deborah Riley-Magnus, and titled 5 DUMB THINGS SMART AUTHORS DO , it is at:
https://rileymagnus.wordpress.com/2014/09/18/5-dumb-things-smart-authors-do/

Generally, we all have been aware of the term KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE, but the larger problem is REACHING YOUR AUDIENCE. Some of the things may have been touched on others, but one item was really eye-opening about the point of pitching “hooks” instead of genres. I realized when I am at a signing event and a visitor asks about the book, I begin with a hook statement immediately, without knowing their interest quite. So, yeah, it made sense, and there is more there.
What do you think?
