“The Doc” book Reboot

Rifling Of Old Cannon, View On The Inside

The Doc novel reboot was the main topic of this short interview on Central Valley Talk’s  live stream webcast of Authors and Artists segment on Thursday March 30.  I also gave the host, Carole, a signed copy of the Pappy Butler novel as the last time on her show I had not received my copies of the book. A brief blurb about Pappy Butler & His Zero Time Theory is retold to Carole. Black Opal Books publisher is also mentioned. While the sequel to The Doc book is titled Delete DOC, and is briefly summarized, not too much is given away. Carole Love Forbes is a gracious host in this short ten minute segment at:

Frank Bergon cover of Jesse’s Ghost

Frank Bergon has had a longer writing career than I at first realized. He is a novelist, critic, and essayist whose writings focus primarily on the history and environment of the American West. His Nevada trilogy consists of three novels spanning a century from the Shoshone massacre of 1911 to the current battle over nuclear waste in the Nevada desert.

There is more at his WordPress site: http://frankbergon.com/

Jesse’s Ghost is a novel based on a real crime involving people he and I both knew and were acquainted with, in the rural farming town on Highway 99. I did not know Frank. Though I was about two years younger than him, he attended the Catholic elementary school to 8th grade, then too, in the high school the student population was 2,500 students. At some point to, he left town and to a different high school.
His writing is entertaining and his characters memorable as well as flawed, real, and vulnerable as we all are. I think that novelizing true events is a tough job. Some will critique the work as, “it didn’t happen that way.” There are a couple things I could have mentioned as additional scenes never reported or revealed, but that’s life. Jesse’s Ghost was about as true as any non-fiction account, but it truly is a novel with all the emotion, motives, and point of views of those characters involved. Frank is a great author.

Art - Cover - Vengeance is Mine
Gary Wayne Walker cover

This is for author Gary Wayne Walker and his novel Vengeance is Mine released, I believe summer of 2013. He sat at a table with me at the Book Barn event last July. This is a great “noir era” story set in North Hollywood and San Bernardino.

How far is too far when it comes to revenge? In Gary Wayne Walker’s debut thriller, “Vengeance Is Mine,” the answer slowly unravels as families are torn apart and alliances are made. The year is 1949, and Los Angeles is the playground on which Mickey Cohen and his mob have chosen to play.

ABOUT
Prominent divorce attorney Everett Taylor takes on his first murder trial despite his wife’s impassioned pleas to the contrary and is immediately plunged into an underworld from which there is no escape. The case, in which a woman shot and killed her husband upon discovering him in bed with his lover,
quickly throws Taylor’s life into turmoil, bringing him toe to toe with Cohen’s mob while drudging up his own dark past in St. Louis with his first wife. Crippled by polio as a small child, Taylor is now faced with other health issues, mental and physical, along with an increasing tumultuous relationship with his family, including a daughter left behind in St. Louis.
This is a story where loyalty is tested and no one is as they seem. Most importantly, it reveals how the desire for vengeance can ruin the vengeful while inflicting unimaginable collateral damage on innocent bystanders.
“If you’re searching for mystery and intrigue and enjoy fast-paced thrill rides, then buckle up and enter Gary Wayne Walker’s world of Vengeance. His storytelling prowess will captivate your imagination and have you sweating bullets right along with his fascinating cast of characters.”–Armen Bacon, author of “Griefland– An Intimate Portrait of Love, Loss and Unlikely Friendship.”
“Gary Wayne Walker weaves his characters with intricate precision through a meticulously crafted plot. This suspenseful page-turner will leave reader eager for a sequel.”– Janice Stevens, Writing Professor and author of nine California history books.

Madera Local Authors Day

Madera Local Authors Day is on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Madera County Library at 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Those authors to be there are: Glenna Jarvis, J. Guibor, “Paul & Marcia,” Carol Wolf, K. Adler, Joe Ozier, Lucille Apcar, Marilyn Meredith, Jennifer Moss, L.G. Flores, Doug Hansen, Tim Desmond.
If there are others there also, I did not get the information. These dozen are supposed to be paired at six tables. Too, there is unfinished construction on the main entrance, so the side street door may be the location to enter.
I was told by another author that this is a good gig.

If you have more questions, please contact Ellen Mester, Madera County Librarian.

Sunny’s latest cover

A friend also, author Sunny Frazier has a new release. This is the third novel in her Christy Bristol Astrology Mystery series. A Snitch in Time is published by Black Opal Books. Besides her own authorship, Sunny heads up a group of writers and authors called “the Posse” which helps all of us fight the numbers, hone marketing skills, make connections, and increase our knowledge of this endeavor as a business. As a mentor for the art we do, she is a tireless cheerleader for many of us striving to write better and promote better.

Over at the fairly new blog for the San Joaquin chapter of Sisters in Crime – The Mystery Blog of San Joaquin Sisters in Crime – has a concise piece about A Snitch in Time and a bit about Sunny too:

The Buzz Interview

As for the results of the “A BOOK AND A DONUT” signing event, sales were GREAT, and as good as the BOOK BARN event in July. But, I did more talking about the book to more visitors than at the Clovis Book Barn. The other plus was that the store wanted The Doc books to sell from the “point of sale” counter.

This “THE BUZZ Interview” BLOG that I wrote last week was meant to be posted BY ME that Thursday, afternoon, with a photo, video link or YouTube link of the interview. I never got it posted last week. As it turned out I did not get a video of it. I thought it was a better interview than the one done two days previous, but that was my wife’s impression of my answers. But here is what happened. After the Tuesday interview, I was offered the Thursday interview, and I opted for the “Full Media” package. This was their highest package. The original broadcast time is live and covers a large area of the valley and a huge “antenna receiver” audience. This on KAIL My 7.1, Comcast 13, Satellite 53, and AT&T U-verse 53. This was “live” at 10:00 am and the show reruns at 4:00 pm at the http://www.centralvalleytalk.com, which is the web streaming show.

I thought a disk was being provided because I had checked for that on the sign-up sheet on Tuesday. At the end of the Thursday interview, I was told I could have a disk of it, but that it was for another fee. I declined that and explained that I would have to sell fifty books to break even with full media package as it was. I also explained that I have no idea what the results would be in my sales, or the numbers who show up at the event pitched in the interview as A Book and a Donut for the coming Saturday.

But, I did save it, the interview, at the home TV on DVR, and too, it is going to take saving it on an old VCR tape and then converting that to digital. So, it could not be done for Thursday afternoon.

For a YouTube of the first interview with Mike Scott, here it is again. ..

Perhaps two interviews in one week were too many to blog about.

And on the cost, is this why authors are advised to not pay for ads?

Hated Protagonists Tips

Family - Tim for Blog Post Oct 2014

It was referred to me last August 19, by author and “The Posse” leader Sunny Frazier, but seems important to comment on now, or anytime. This was about “5 Protagonists Readers Hate,” a blog by Anne Allen. Actually the entire title was “5 Protagonists Readers Hate: Why Writers Shouldn’t Identify too Closely with a Main Character.” The discussion, examples, and reasons are an insight for us as readers as well as for writers of fiction. The other interesting point that is made is the related topic of fictionalizing real life experiences. I’m sure there are more lengthy discussions on the topic, but there is so much that is pithy on our craft in this one piece. She titles these 5 types as:

Mary Sue
The Special Victim
Perfect Pat
Looky-Loo
Literal Larry

There is a last section about the “solution” to the problem, but you can read the entire thing and the “solution” at: http://annerallen.blogspot.com/2014/08/5-protagonists-readers-hate-why-writers.html
