There has been growth also in Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and Sons of Confederate Veterans. Our national Memorial Day, Decoration Day having been inaugurated two years after the “War Between The States” in May 1867 was first observed in May 1868 as a memorial to the Civil War soldiers. It should also be noted that Confederate wives, daughters and widows began spring Memorials in Richmond, Virginia before the war was over.
